Night of the Living RED 🥎 — Week 9

RED vs. Goodfellas

The first meeting between RED and Goodfellas was an absolute battle, with both teams trading blows in a close, competitive game from start to finish. The rematch? Well, let’s just say RED had other plans.

RED came out swinging, putting up big numbers in every inning while Goodfellas struggled to find their footing. The bats were on fire, and the defense was right there to back them up. Alex and Aaron were vacuum cleaners in the outfield, catching everything that came their way. The infield was just as sharp, with Bob Cain making some outstanding plays while putting together a monster day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with four RBIs. Not a bad night!

Aaron Dragoo decided three runs at a time sounded pretty good and launched a three-run bomb of his own.

And then there’s the ageless wonder, Ray Short, who apparently hasn’t gotten the memo that he’s supposed to slow down with age. Ray blasted his second home run of the season, collected four hits and four RBIs, and pitched an outstanding game. The man was doing a little bit of everything out there.

Jesse and Clint were both locked in, going 4-for-5 each while making their share of plays on defense. Alex, Craig, Rick, and Coach chipped in with three hits apiece, while Jonathon added a couple of knocks of his own.

Then there was Jorge, who absolutely crushed a ball an estimated 350 feet. Unfortunately for Jorge, Goodfellas manager Geoff happened to be playing on the other field to make the catch Tough break, Jorge.

When the hitting is rolling like that and the defense is making plays all over the field, RED is a tough team to beat. This was a complete team performance, and the final score said it all:

RED 27 — Goodfellas 11

One last disappointment, though: Goodfellas’ own Cap wasn’t there. We were really looking forward to giving him a hard time after the game. Word on the street is that he was attending a Justin Bieber concert.

We’re not here to judge, Cap. Everybody has their thing.

 The Sliders outscored the Mudcats 10-2 over the last three innings to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning 20-20. The Mudcats somehow managed to get runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh and not score.

Scott Stevens, Ed Sullivan and Clint Logsdon all went 4/4. Ed doubled four times. Matt and Kevin Riley, Donnie Young and Aaron Gendelman each had three hits. Aaron homered to go with two doubles and four RBI. Kevin doubled and tripled to drive in four while brother Matt doubled twice and knocked in five more runs.

Another come-from-behind-tie. A tie that appeared to be slipping away in the bottom of the 7th. More on that later

Sandwiched between three 5 run innings were a pair of zeros. 2 lineouts to the pitcher in the 2nd inning started and ended it. The 3rd started with a baserunning error by our pitcher who thought... Who knows what he thought? He managed to turn a long single into a short out at 2nd to start the inning. He didn't have time to soak in his tears as the next 2 batters made quick outs and sent him right back out to the rubber. It wasn't looking good as the Cats again posted 5 runs. The Slider were already trailing by 8 after only 3 innings

We finally woke our bats up in the 4th and 5th pushing across 5 in each while holding the Fish to only 5. Their lead was down to 3 but they increased that by 1 in the 6th. Lately the Sliders have owned the 7th. It was no different this week. We managed to tie the game before our pitcher made the 3rd out on a weak fly ball to left. Our chance to win was gone. Now the best we could hope for was a tie. The Fish Lawyers had us worried with no outs and the winning run at 3rd but an infield grounder to SS who threw the runner out at home and a line drive to our RC fielder put 2 quick outs in our pocket. BUT WAIT! The runner on 1st never tagged up on the line out to RC The easy throw over to 1st ended the game. Now you can see why we feel like we won. They were pounding our pitcher pretty good the whole game so not having to face another batter was relieving.

Notable Slider Bats - Perfect at the Plate : Mark Dushkin and Byron Hoch [4-4 w/ 9 RBIs] and Ryan Berger [3-3 w/ a BB] Almost Perfect : John Peterson and me [3-4] Not Quite Almost Perfect : Mauricio Espinosa, Mike Loomis, Tom Karins and Jonathan "Not Jonathon" Pace [2-4] Gabe Del Gato blacked out and can't remember anything that happened after the dodgers lost.

Next week we finish this 7-game road trip at the Colosseum where we battle the Gladiators again. Good luck to everyone and play safe.

Last night a few innings into the game I looked to see if the moon was full cause it was a crazy game of softball. The goats came out swinging (they look like an all-star team by the way) scoring 5 in the first three innings. They came down to earth the last four only totaling 6 the rest of the way. The Dudes kept pace scoring 14 runs in the first 4 innings but also ran out of gas only totaling 4 the rest of the way for a final of 21-18. The Dudes were led by 4 guys going 4/5 with a couple of home runs.

GOATS BUTT SAND DUDES 21-18

 In a slugfest more reminiscent of a football score, the GOATS outlasted the Sand Dudes 21-18.   Both teams started off red HOT, with the G-Men, frustrated over last week's 7th inning loss, plating 5 runs in each of the first 3 innings on hits by Rick Markle (2B), Alan Paulette, Dale Olson, Greg Morris and a big 3 run HR by Nick James in the first, hits by Bob Nagle, Gary English, Miko Uruhu, and run producing hits by Markle (2B), and Olson in the second, and hits by Brian Cox, Mike Reirdon, James, Jason Dreas, and Leo Sanchez in the top of the third. The undermanned Dudes countered with 3 runs in the bottom of the first on a well-placed line drive 3 run homer by Chris Comen to right center. In the second, the Sandmen scored  5 runs on hits by Kevin Sutton, Bruce Varney, Shane Hansen, and a wicked hop 3 run homer by Roger Shadowen to center. In the bottom of the third, the Dudes scored 3 more runs to be down 15-11 after 3 innings on hits by Juan Lie, Sutton, Randy Fillat, and Hansen.

   While the Sandmen's relief pitcher, Justin Clark, limited the GOATS' bats to a single run in the next two innings,  the determined Dudes narrowed the GOATS lead to 16-15 by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth on hits by Comen, Lie, and Sutton, and a lone run in the bottom of the fifth on hits by Clark and Tony Ambre.

  Sensing the game's favorable outcome escaping them, the GOATS dug deep and produced another five spot in the top of the sixth on hits by English, Secret Weapon Sanchez, JC Mendiola, and run producing hits by Olson and Cox, while the GOATS' relief pitcher, Greg Morris was shutting out the Sand Dudes in the bottom of the inning to go up 21-15 after six innings.

   The GOATS were again shut out in the open inning by Clark, setting the stage for a potential Sand Dudes comeback in the bottom of the seventh. But it wasn't to be as the Sand Dudes scored only 3 runs, aided by some GOAT infield throwing miscues, when their last batter lined out to third to end the game.

   GOAT bats were led by Olson (4-4), Markle 3-3(three 2Bs), James 2-3 with a HR and Sac Fly. English and Sanchez were each 2-2 and a walk.

   The Sand Dudes attack was led by Comen with 3 hits including a home run, and Lie, Sutton, Clark and Varney, with 3 hits each. Shadowen also hit a home run.
